Important policies regarding student health at Utica University.

Immunization Policy

All students enrolled in a New York State College must be in compliance with New York State Public Health Law 2165. Failure to meet these requirements may result in cancellation of registration.

All students taking any ground (on-campus) classes must submit the following proof of immunizations:

  • Measles
Two doses of live measles vaccine. The first dose must have been received on or after the student's first birthday and the second dose no less than 28 days after the first dose.

The first dose must have been received on or after January 1, 1968. Immunization prior to January 1, 1968 will be accepted if the Health Care Provider certifies a live vaccine was used. Physician documentation of disease, or serologic evidence of immunity will be accepted.

  • Rubella
One dose of live rubella vaccine administered on or after the student's first birthday and must be given on or after January 1, 1969. Serologic evidence of immunity will be accepted. Physician documented disease is not accepted.

  • Mumps
One dose of live mumps vaccine administered on or after the student's first birthday and must be given on or after January 1, 1969. Physician documentation of disease, or serologic evidence of immunity will be accepted.

  • Meningococcal Disease
New York State Public Health Law 2167 requires colleges and universities to distribute information about meningococcal disease and vaccination to all students. All students must complete a meningitis response form indicating when they were vaccinated or if they are declining to be vaccinated. Either is acceptable. Visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention at https://www.cdc.gov/meningococcal/ to learn more.

In addition to the measles, mumps, and rubella immunizations, the American College Health Association (ACHA) strongly recommends that students be vaccinated against tetanus, pertussis, diphtheria, polio, varicella, hepatitis B, and meningitis. At this time, law does not mandate them.

The COVID-19 vaccination is strongly encouraged for all students taking classes here at Utica University but is not required. However, a certain clinical site or internship may require the vaccine.

Students who are transferring  from another New York State College may have their immunization records faxed directly to the Student Health Center at (315) 792-3700. To avoid delays please contact the Student Health Center at the college you are transferring from as soon as possible.

International students are required to show proof of immunizations prior to traveling to the United States. Given the worldwide outbreak of measles, we will have zero tolerance for failure to comply with our policies.

The deadline for clearing your record is 14 days from the start of classes, both for the Fall and Spring semesters per New York State Public Health law 2165. Failure to provide immunizations after that date will result in cancellation of your registration.

Please mail, fax records or upload to the student health portal.

Smoking Policy

It is the policy of the College to achieve a smoke free environment in accordance with Public Health Law, Article 13E, Section 1399 paragraph 02a "Smoking shall not be permitted and no person shall smoke in any indoor area open to the public in all public and private schools including elementary and secondary schools, colleges, universities and other education and vocational institutions."

As we learn more about the harmful effects of involuntary smoking, the public interest in non-smoking rules grows. There has been an increasing amount of new legislation on tobacco products and their use. Furthermore, based upon the negative health effects of smokeless tobacco and on the recommendation of the American College Health Association, it is also the policy of Utica College to restrict the use of smokeless tobacco as defined in the policy. For details about smoking and tobacco use on campus, including smoking cessation programs, see Utica's Smoking Policy.
