PIONEER TIPS FOR HEALTHY STUDENTS

The following list highlights steps you can take to stay healthy!

A simple but important action that can reduce illness is to wash your hands frequently with soap and water throughout the day. Soap, lather, and rub your hands together for 20 seconds, then rinse.

Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, or cough into your upper sleeve, not your hands. Use proper cough etiquette and “Cover your Cough and Clean your Hands.”

Eat a balanced diet of nutritious foods.

Drink water, 6-8 cups as a daily minimum.

Exercise 60 minutes, 3 or more times a week.

Sleep 8 hours each night.

Manage your stress, have fun.

Reduce high-risk behaviors such as smoking, alcohol, drugs, and unsafe sex.

Take medications as directed by your health care provider. Make an appointment with the Student Wellness Center if you become sick.

The misuse of alcohol and other drugs can play a big role in the level of success of university students. We provide services, tools, and resources so that navigating decisions when it comes to drugs and alcohol becomes a team effort and they will be supported and encouraged. To read more about substance use among college students, see this article: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6527004/.

Addiction doesn’t happen overnight, and not all students who drink or use drugs “excessively” are “addicted.” However, there’s a slippery slope to addiction, and we want to be there to help you avoid an unhealthy relationship and create good decision-making habits surrounding mood enhancing substances.

If you are concerned or unsure about your use or someone else’s, do something. Speak with someone, use the tools and resources below, or call/email us and we can discuss your concerns in a safe and confidential setting.

NCAA Choices Grant- Red Watch Band Alcohol Education and Bystander Intervention Training

Interested in being trained as an informed bystander? Email HWC@utica.edu to find out more.

Red Watch Band training also includes access to free (for a limited time) CPR Certification from the Utica EMS through the Red Cross.
